Review of "Her Last Request" by: Charlie Daye

"Her Last Request" By: Charlie Daye
Rating: ☆☆☆☆

Samantha's grandmother is terminally ill and her time in this mortal world is nearly up. Her grandmother is at peace with this and ready to go when the time comes. Ithiel is the Angel of Death, helping people make the transition from life to death and into heaven or hell, and he is helping Samantha's grandmother. Patricia's only concern about dying is her grand daughter. She wants Sam to be happy and find a man she can love and knows that Sam will take her death hard. She begs Ithiel to look after Sam when she is gone. Ithiel is reluctant as he has never revealed himself to a human who is not dying before. But when he sees Sam in her grandmother's room, he feels an instant connection to her. When Patricia's time comes to an end, Ithiel gives Sam the greatest gift of all - the chance to say goodbye. It is Ithiel that supports her through her grief and helps her start living. As they become closer and a relationship develops between them, Ithiel knows that he must reveal his true self to her. Sam's issue is not that he is an angel but that she feels that he is with her out of pity. Sam is insecure about herself after she found her ex-husband in bed with a blonde, stick thin model. Who wouldn't feel insecure after that!?! Sam and Ithiel are meant to be together but with Sam's insecurity, a betrayal by a fellow angel, and decisions around mortality or immortality to make, will they find their Happy Ever After? This book touched me personally. I have a very strong belief in angels and heaven after watching my own mum die from a terminal illness a few years ago. The images that Charlie Daye created matched my own expectations of angels and what heaven looks like. It brings comfort to those that have loved and lost. The issue of grief is only a part of the book but it is dealt with in a sensitive way and is the part that touched me the most. The second part of the book deals with the decisions that Sam and Ithiel have to make to if they want to be together. Love doesn't have boundaries. Do they choose mortality and live out their lives together? Or do they choose an eternity together? What strikes me most about Sam is the overwhelming compassion she feels for other people and this becomes particularly evident later in the book. For Ithiel it is his selflessness - putting Sam's needs first and will willingly give up everything to be with Sam.

This is a book that kept me thinking long after I finished it and has left me wanting more Angel Stories!
