Review of "Hoping for Second Chances" by R.E. Cagle

"Hoping for Second Chances" by R.E. Cagle
Rating: ☆☆☆☆

Lucy has managed to escape from an abusive relationship in every sense of the word.  Steven was uber controlling and physically abusive and this continues beyond Lucy's escape as he plots to get her back.  Lucy's strength of character and courage in escaping show clearly from the fact that she is very clear about the person that she is.  The instant that she sets eyes on Chase she knows that he has the potential to steal her heart but she is very fearful as he has controlling tendencies.

Chase needs control in a relationship and, whilst this doesn't endear him to the reader at the start as he recognises that Lucy could be the one, as the story unfolds and he reveals more of his past the reader is better able to understand these tendencies.  With this understanding comes a clear difference between Chase and Steven and a better understanding of being in a dominant relationship.  While Steven took control without any say from Lucy, Chase doesn't.  It is for Lucy to yield control to him.  Everything that Chase does is to make Lucy feel protected and cared for, whilst everything that Steven did was to make Steven feel good about himself.  Chase's character grows on you as you find out more about what makes him tick and his relationship past has not been pretty either and he also has trust issues.

Taking that second chance won't be easy for either Lucy or Chase as they both need to overcome their trust issues, but they have the potential to heal each other.  The characters grow on you and get under your skin as you get further and further into the story.  This was a really good read and had it.  From lots of drama to the full range of emotions that will make you laugh and cry and everything in between.  From hotness to sweetness.  This was a read that captured you into the story.
