Review of "Breakdown" by Amanda Lance

"Breakdown" by Amanda Lance

Rating:  ☆☆☆☆☆

I will admit that I didn't know what to think of this book to start with.  It starts in such a dark place with Charlotte in a dark state of mind.  But this was a story that needed to be told.  In dealing with suicidal thoughts and depression, it doesn't shirk away from those difficult subjects and deals with them in a incredibly sensitive manner.

Charlotte is struggling with life after an incident in high school left her traumatised, which led to her depression.  She has never sought help and never talked about it. With no outlet she sees no option left but to end her life to take away the empty feeling.  Her parents are so engrossed in their own lives and their own perfectly mapped out future for her that they do not notice her deep seeded unhappiness.

When a stranger steps in and stops her, little does she realise that her life is about to change.  William has an instinctual feeling about what she needs and refuses to give up on her.  He encourages her, listens to her, pays attention to her and understands her.  Through William she discovers new things (not all legal) that make her feel alive again.

This is not your typical love story but it is a powerful one.  Charlotte's journey from the point of despair at the beginning to where she ends up is not an easy journey.  Many of us will know someone who suffers from depression or may be suffering from it yourself.   Hopefully this story will bring a better understanding of depression and its effects and help remove the stigma attached to it.  An incredibly powerful and thought provoking read.
