Review of “Less Than Nothing” By R.E. Blake

“Less Than Nothing” By R.E. Blake
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Less Than Nothing is a story that will keep you reading. This was a story that I was hesitant to start. I was thinking here we go with a teenage runaway. I was wrong, the moment I was pulled in to Sage’s world I wanted to keep following her journey. Less Than Nothing was an emotional draw on me. If I needed to put the book down I would return to it thinking, I’m not sure if I’m ready to reenter Sage’s world. And darned if I was wrong every time, finding myself captivated with Sage & Derek.

Sage is barely surviving on the streets when she meets up with Derek who is also homeless. Derek challenges her to have dreams of the future and to follow them. Derek shares his dream and encourages Sage. Sage touches you with how she is living and surviving. She manages to make some great friends who keep her balanced and help her out. Sage is a survivor and she learns that so is Derek. Sage’s journey is not only one going east but one of maturing, learning that the darkness in everyone is not always bad. While this book had the chance to focus more on the ugly underside of being homeless, I was grateful that it didn’t. I felt the tug and sadness with Sage being homeless, but liked that her soul wasn’t scarred by being homeless.

Sage’s music is what saves her both on the streets and in pursuing her new dreams. What happens if she fails? What happens if she succeeds? Less Than Nothing is the first in a trilogy. The book did end leaving me feeling good with the outcome but also with questions of the future for Sage and Derek. I look forward to the next books and following Sage & Derek’s dreams.
