This was a story I was not expecting after downloading this book about a year ago and stumbled across it in an attempt to clear some space on my kindle. It has now found a special space in my heart. It is an unusual story but a story of great poignancy and about being true to yourself.
Nicholas is certainly sexy and a woman's man who comes across as confident and sure of himself but most of this is just an act, even more than the drag act he performs on a regular basis. When he finds himself living next door to Freda who is outspoken and confident but not model-size, he finds himself with feelings of belonging for the first time in his life. The draw he feels for Freda is immense and he finds himself making an excuse to spend more time with her and to see if she accepts his other persona. Freda becomes his wardrobe assistant and feels an enormous towards him too. Freda has her own insecurities and is worried about getting too close and he then go off with someone else. Together they can make each other whole.
I loved the word play throughout from Freda and Nicholas as they dance around each other. I equally loved the vulnerability of both characters that comes out very strongly despite the public faces they both wear. It made this story one of beauty and of raw emotions as they come to terms with being in love. I can't believe I waited so long to find this book but I'm glad I did.
