Synopsis
Ryan Steel is known in Snow Creek as the handsomest Steel brother with the most jovial personality. Now that his busy grape harvest and winemaking season is over, he's happy to spend time with his family and help his brothers, Talon and Jonah, celebrate their impending nuptials. The Steels are taking a well-deserved break from the conspiracy surrounding them...until an unlikely woman and a long-buried secret shatter Ryan's world.
Detective Ruby Lee has been on her own since she was fifteen. When her past collides with the Steel family's mysteries, she's determined to find the truth. She has her own issues, and she's not looking for a relationship, despite her all-consuming attraction to Ryan Steel. The gorgeous dark-haired man gets under her skin anyway...and he needs her.
Together they explore both of their histories, but those pasts could cost them a future.
Review
Rating: 4.5*
I jumped into this book with enthusiasm to see where Helen Hardt would take us this time. Each installment has taken us on an exceptional journey and this was no different. After the bombshell that was dropped at the end of the last installment, I eagerly consumed this book very quickly and would have read it one sitting if I hadn't had to go to work!!
The first part of 'Shattered' was a reprieve to an extent for the Steel family with a happy celebration in amongst the revelations that have been uncovered whilst on the trail of justice. This gave us the opportunity to get to know about the last Steel brother, Ryan, who has been very much in the background until this point. We also have an opportunity to find out more about Ruby, who Ryan finds himself drawn to. The strength of both of these characters is impressive, but Ruby has been hiding herself away from life outside of work because of her past. Ryan awakens in her her sensuality and a desire to explore her sexuality.
Whilst the return home heralded a return to uncovering the truth and this particular truth has the potential to shatter the family, the interlude away did seem slightly protracted to me. However it still had the trademarks of Helen Hardt and this series. I loved the sensuality of the first part, the fast pace of the second part, the secrets that are revealed that present more questions than answers, the secrets that are still be revealed. It all comes together to create a tense read.
