An ancient debt forms the basis of Debt Inheritance in the form of the first born girl of the Weaver family is owed to the Hawk family. Coupled with the fact that the Hawks are members of an English Aristocratic MC and it makes for an interesting story that will continue to reveal its secrets as the series unfolds. Pepper Winters leaves you still with unanswered questions and definitely wanting more.
Nila is naive and inexperienced when it comes to all things relating to men having led a sheltered life to her dad and brother preventing contact with men as far as humanly possible. At a point in her career where she is successful, it all comes crashing down when Jethro Hawk enters her life and takes her away from her life, seemingly with her father's permission. Despite her apparent inexperience and the vertigo that hinders her life, she is feisty and doesn't give in easily, making Jethro work hard every step of the way. I love how she refuses to give in completely and is continually defiant, even in the face of extreme punishment.
Jethro is a hard man, who is used to getting what he wants. He doesn't bank on Nila fighting back. On a number of occasions she manages to get one up on him but he will always come out on top as he holds the ultimate trump card: the safety of her family. Even though he has his family duty to follow through on, there does seem a reluctance at times to follow through completely on what he should be doing to Nila and a struggle to distance himself from her. While there is a lot of cruelty oozing from his character, you can see the edges softening a touch.
Everything that is done to Nila is done to demean her and make her powerless so that she may repay the debt that the Hawks feel are owed them. What is done to Nila is cruel and degrading behaviour but it is done with the ultimate goal of making her powerless against them. Even Jethro's decision at the end of this instalment is all about the power he holds over Nila. He is the one who holds her life in his hands. This is not a pretty story and it is far from over. Really need to see where this story leads and who will ultimately come out on top.
