SOMETHING IN THE WAY HE NEEDS BY CARDENO C - Cover

Something in the Way He Needs (Family #1) by Cardeno C.

Police captain Asher Penaz’s staunch professionalism bleeds into his home life, down to his neatly pressed attire and spartan apartment. He enjoys being the man in charge, and leather bars satisfy his need for dominance—so his sudden and powerful attraction to the lighthearted, free-spirited Daniel Tover throws him for a loop. In his entire life, Daniel has never gotten what he needs, so he moves to the next place, the next job, the next attempt to find something worth staying for, always landing at the top of his game, but never feeling like he belongs. The chemistry between Asher and Daniel sizzles, so Asher invites Daniel home. As both men struggle to learn themselves while getting to know each other, the lines of desire and control blur. With all that fire comes the risk of getting burned. But if Daniel and Asher can walk through the flames together, they might find what they desperately need

Asher is a Dom, who is always looking for his next Sub needing that control in the relationship.  Dragged to his best friend's stag do in Vegas, he's not actually enjoying the experience of going to strip clubs.  These women are definitely not his type.  After excusing himself from one of these outings he becomes intrigued by a man, who is an absolute klutz but there is just something about him that pulls Asher to him.  There is a shyness and a naivety about Daniel that is endearing but he's not usually what Asher goes for.  With Daniel refusing to put out unless he's in a relationship, Asher is forced to take a long look at what he wants but equally doesn't want to scare Daniel away with the lifestyle that he lives.  For the first time ever Asher is taking the relationship step but in his unique commanding way.

Asher and Daniel are complete opposites.  Daniel comes across as a bit flaky in the fact that he is forgetful, doesn't stay in one place or one job for long and doesn't really know what he wants from life.  The reality is that he just hasn't found his place, hasn't felt needed before but equally has experienced a lot in his life that most people would dream of.  In a way his baggy, old clothes and flaky demeanor are a mask that he wears but Asher sees through it.
Asher being new to the whole relationship thing, finds it difficult to be the Dom he is used to being and finds himself having to find a way that is acceptable to both of them.  Equally the jealousy he feels when Daniel is around other men is something new to him too and he really does struggle to control this.

I really enjoyed the playful nature between Asher and Daniel; the shyness of Daniel is endearing and seeing Asher bring him out of himself is fun to read.  There is a softness to Asher when Daniel's klutzy nature rears its head that makes him oh so loveable.

This is what I can only describe as one of the sweetest most romantic stories I have read in a long time.  I absolutely adored Emilio and Spencer's story.  Both have an instant attraction to each other but that's where the similarities between them end.  Emilio is confident, young and not afraid to go after what he wants and what he wants is Spencer.  Spencer is intellectual, older and he is distinctly lacking in confidence when it comes to other men after some pretty horrendous past experiences.  He wants Emilio but the fear of rejection stops him from doing anything about it, admiring from afar instead.

The tough, confident man that Emilio is, is exactly what Spencer needs to be himself and find his lost inner confidence.  Spencer's past could potentially stop their relationship before it even begins but Emilio's patience and understanding of the situation means that Spencer is given the space and the time he needs and with Emilio's complete attention and love can start to come to terms with the past and start moving forward.  Together with the rest of his family, Emilio can give him the love and the acceptance that he so desperately needs.

I loved these two characters and the way in which they bring out the best in other.  It is not dramatic but understated and concentrates on the emotions of the characters.  It was a read that sucked me into their story and kept me captivated until the end.

Rating: ☆☆☆☆

I have loved this series but for me this one was my least favourite. I enjoyed it but it didn't suck me in as the others did. Charlie 'Chase' has been in love with a total of two men: Scott and Arden. For one reason or another they didn't work out and these reasons are explored throughout the book. When tragedy strikes in Charlie's life and he finds himself back in Scott and Arden's lives again, he cannot bear to face them, particularly as they are in a committed relationship with each other.

Both Arden and Scott regret their decisions to end things with Charlie and both still have a place in their hearts for him and want him in their lives and as part of their relationship. Charlie has still not gotten over Arden and Scott and still loves them both.

This is a story of an unconventional relationship but one that works. We see most of the story through Charlie's eyes so I was sceptical about the relationship due to the way both of them treated him but seeing the way that they are with him now, makes you kind of root for their relationship to work.

MORE THAN EVERYTHING BY CARDENO C. - EXCERPT

I was so lost in thought, I had the door open before I looked up. I raised my head when I saw two sets of feet walk in.

And there, standing in my apartment, were Scott Boone and Adan Navarro. I gasped and leaped back from the physical embodiments of the ghosts who had never stopped haunting me.

“Charlie!” Scott shouted happily, and at the same moment Adan excitedly cried out, “Chase!”

It was like a fucking nightmare.

“Fuck,” I muttered and turned my head quickly from my first love to the only other man I’d trusted with my heart. They’d each eviscerated me once upon a time, and though I’d healed, mostly, being faced with both of them at the same moment was still too much… way too much. I suddenly felt as nauseous as Stacia.

Adan slowly turned his head to Scott, whose mouth was gaping open.

“Charlie?” Adan asked weakly.

Scott closed his mouth and gulped. “Chase?” he said.

“Fuck,” I groaned, as my brain started catching up to the comedy of horrors unfolding in front of me. It wasn’t just that they were both there at the same time. They had been standing close together when I’d opened the door. Really close. And was Scott’s arm around Adan’s back?

They both looked over at me and stared.

“Charlie?” Scott asked, his voice hesitant, the question clear from histone.

“Chase?” Adan asked, sounding equal parts incredulous and horrified. Their tones and body language had already clued me in to what I was seeing, but when I shifted my gaze from Scott’s eyes to Adan’s and then back again, my suspicion was confirmed. I knew them well enough to recognize what I was seeing.

I’d loved two men during my thirty-five years on this planet. Only two. And I’d lost them both. Wouldn’t it just figure that they’d found in each other what they had both deemed missing in me?

I dropped my face into my hands and whispered, “Fuck.”

Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno's stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever-after sunset. Cardeno's Home, Family, and Mates series have received awards from Love Romances and More Golden Roses, Rainbow Awards, the Goodreads M/Romance Group, and various reviewers. But even more special to CC are heartfelt reactions from readers, like, "You bring joy and love and make it part of the every day."
