With the much anticipated trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey out this last week, it made my book of the week choice an easy one. Love it or loathe it, the series brought the genre to a brand new audience and, well brought me back to the genre.
We are all familiar with the story: Anastasia Steele stands in for her friend to interview the successful Christian Grey. He decides that he has to have her, he makes her an offer and entrance into his world of BDSM. And so begins there story and their journey: Anastasia naïve and new to the lifestyle and Christian tormented by his past.
Whilst most women can relate to Anastasia and her clumsiness and innocence in dealing with Christian, she is entering a world that she knows nothing about with a dangerous naivety. Christian is arrogant in his desire to have Anastasia at any costs and his arrogance results in him doing too much too soon with her and almost destroys things before they begin.
Unfortunately his arrogance just adds to his allure as a book boyfriend. His dominance inside and outside the bedroom adds to his attractiveness and mystery. I can also see why some don't relate to him. His arrogance is dangerous and he takes risks beyond what he should.
Throughout, I was equal parts enthralled and equal parts annoyed by the characters and the story. But for me it was a great book with a story that brought a fresh perspective to the genre. It is certainly one of those reads where you will need clean panties at the end. Out of the three books, the first is still my favourite and one that I have returned to again and again. And after seeing the trailer, I am now a little more excited to see the film.
