Following the apparent suicide of his sister, Lachlan returns home to put the events behind him and be with those he cares for. Julia is there to open a new bakery when their paths cross and he comes to her rescue.
The sparks that fly between then are instant but they try to resist acting on their attraction. Julia doesn't think that someone like Lachlan would be interested in someone like her. But when they can't resist anymore they determine that it will be short term and that they don't want to know anything about their real lives, including their names.
Lachlan is convinced that what happened to his sister is linked to the events of their past and that someone wanted her out of the way to keep her quiet. However, most of this book focussed on the growing relationship between Julia and Lachlan with the investigation as an incidental side event. Whilst I would have probably liked more about the mystery, it was important for these two to grow closer and for them to be comfortable with each other. I especially loved the confidence that Lachlan is able to improve in Julia with the way that he worships her and makes sure she knows she is incredible.
I did enjoy this first instalment in this series and am looking forward to seeing where their journey takes me, particularly with that ending.
